2026 Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan G

If you’re turning 65 soon or already on Medicare in the Tampa Bay area, you might be wondering how to handle extra medical costs while keeping your monthly premiums as low as possible. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers a lot, but it leaves you responsible for deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. That’s where the 2026 Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan G (also called Medigap High Deductible G or HDG) comes in. It gives you the same powerful coverage as regular Plan G, but only after you meet a higher calendar-year deductible.

Many healthy, active people in Florida, especially in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough, Hernando, western Polk, and northern Manatee counties, choose the 2026 Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan G because it delivers excellent protection at a significantly lower monthly cost. It’s one of the smartest options for those who don’t expect frequent doctor visits or hospital stays and want to save money on premiums while still enjoying full Plan G benefits once the deductible is satisfied.

I intend to answer most of your questions in this article, but if I miss anything, please email me at daniel@myphss.com, and I will answer it

What Is Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan G?

High Deductible Plan G is a standardized Medigap policy sold by private insurance companies. The benefits are identical, no matter which carrier you choose; the only difference is the premium.

Like all Medigap plans, it works seamlessly with Original Medicare. You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the U.S., with no networks or referrals.

Here’s how it works in 2026: You pay the first $2,950 in Medicare-covered out-of-pocket costs (deductibles, coinsurance, and copays that a regular Plan G would normally cover). This $2,950 deductible includes the Medicare Part B deductible ($283 in 2026).

Once you reach $2,950 in a calendar year, the plan pays 100% of all remaining covered Medicare expenses for the rest of the year, exactly like a standard Plan G.

What Does High Deductible Plan G Cover in 2026?

After you meet the $2,950 deductible, the plan pays the same benefits as regular Plan G:

  • Part A Hospital Costs: Full Part A deductible ($1,736 in 2026), all coinsurance, and up to 365 extra “lifetime reserve” days.
  • Part B Coinsurance/Copays: 100% of the 20% coinsurance for doctor visits, outpatient services, lab tests, surgery, durable medical equipment, and preventive care (after the deductible is met).
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Care: Coinsurance for days 21–100 after a qualifying hospital stay.
  • Hospice Care: Coinsurance or copays.
  • First 3 Pints of Blood: Covered if needed.
  • Part B Excess Charges: 100% of any amount a doctor charges above the Medicare-approved rate (when assignment is not accepted).
  • Foreign Travel Emergency: 80% of emergency care outside the U.S. (up to the plan’s lifetime limit, typically $50,000).

What it does NOT cover (same as regular Plan G):

  • The $2,950 plan deductible itself
  • The Medicare Part B deductible is included in the $2,950 (you don’t pay it separately after the plan deductible is met)
  • Routine dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term custodial care

Why You Should Consider The High Deductible Plan G in 2026?

This plan is often the lowest-cost way to get “Plan G-level” protection. Monthly premiums are typically 30–50% lower than a standard Plan G (in our Tampa Bay area, many 65-year-olds see quotes between $70–$140/month depending on age, gender, zip code, and carrier; we’ll shop the best rates for you).

It’s an excellent choice if you:

  • Are in good health and rarely need medical care
  • Have savings or a health savings account to comfortably cover up to $2,950 in a year
  • Want the same nationwide freedom and zero out-of-pocket costs after the deductible
  • Prefer to pay less every month and “self-insure” the deductible

Important note: If you have higher medical expenses in a year (hospital stays, frequent specialist visits, etc.), you’ll pay more out-of-pocket than with a standard Plan G until the $2,950 deductible is met. That’s why it’s best for healthy individuals or couples who want to minimize premiums.

Who Can Get High Deductible Plan G?

  • You must have Original Medicare Parts A and B.
  • Best time: Your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period (starts the month you turn 65 and enroll in Part B). No health questions, guaranteed issue.
  • Outside open enrollment: Some carriers may underwrite (ask health questions), but Florida’s birthday rule can help with switches in many cases.
  • Available in most (but not all) areas of Florida, we’ll confirm carriers that offer it in your zip code.

Because we don’t need your number to give you a quote!

Other insurance agents ask for your number because they believe if they don’t have it, you will go to someone else and they will lose the sale. We don’t use sales tactics like that, if you can find a better price from someone else we want to you to go to them. Save money, that is the whole point of our business.

Nothing, if you decided to buy a policy and we are the writing agent the insurance company will pay us a commission for that sale. The price of your policy does not change because of that.

No matter where you live in Florida, MyPHSS is here to help protect your golden years.

Before COVID-19, we operated several local offices in the Tampa Bay area. Like many small businesses, we closed our doors during the pandemic and transitioned to working remotely for the safety of our staff and clients.

After restrictions were lifted, we found that our services ran just as smoothly—if not better—without the overhead costs of a traditional office space. By eliminating unnecessary expenses like rent and utilities, we’re able to focus more on serving our community and keeping costs down for our clients.

Today, your local MyPHSS agent can assist you over the phone, via email, or in person—right in the comfort of your own home, just like your plumber or electrician. It’s convenient, personal, and always pressure-free.
