Am I Eligible for Medicare When I Turn 65?

Yes, you are generally eligible for Medicare when you turn 65 if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has lived in the country for at least 5 years

What does Medicare Do?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the U.S. for people aged 65 or older, younger people with disabilities, and those with end-stage renal disease.

How does Medicare Work?

It consists of four parts: Part A (hospital), Part B (medical), Part C (Advantage), and Part D (prescription drugs).

What is Medicare Part A?

Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay $0 for Part A because they paid Medicare taxes while working.

What is Medicare Part B?

Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Part B requires a monthly premium, which is $202.90 for most in 2026.

What is Medicare Part C (Advantage)?

Part C (Medicare Advantage): Sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. They usually bundle Parts A, B, and D. Some also offer additional benefits, such as vision, hearing, and dental care.

What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is optional, private insurance that covers outpatient prescription drugs for people with Medicare, helping to lower costs for generic and brand-name medications.

What is a Medicare Supplement Plan?

A Medicare Supplement plan (or Medigap) is private insurance designed to pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

When do i need to sign up?

You sign up for Medicare during a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) around your 65th birthday: it starts three months before, the month of, and three months after your birthday. If you receive Social Security, you are automatically enrolled.
